True Creators

Poetic Outlaws

By: Erik Rittenberry
In a world where self-worth is measured
through the filtered gaze of a camera lens, where
relevancy depends on relentless exposure,
I have come to see that the truest,
most authentic creators are those who
shun the spotlight, the few solitary
figures quietly attuned to life’s arcane
rhythms, content to remain
unseen.

They dwell far from the clamor
of the ego-driven crowd -- that
congregation of convulsionaries
self-assured with their half-knowledge,
heaving their regurgitated
views into the digital abyss
fishing for desperate disciples
who will kneel at the altar
of their cheap insight.

Authentic creators feel no compulsion
to adorn themselves with titles, to animate
their anemic individualities with boisterous
antics, to parade their prestige or flaunt
their unmerited pride as a means
to disguise their inner
wasteland.

They understand that speech should be
scarce and devoid of platitudes
and catchphrases. They speak
only when their words can rise
above the purity of silence, carrying
truths and profound emotions, distilled
into the simplest and most
essential form.

They create in the shadows, tucked away
from the prevailing passions of
the dispossessed glory-grabbers, content
in doing their work for its own sake.

They aren’t bogged down with inane vanities
or a need to appear virtuous.

They are metaphysical vessels of a creative power
that extends far beyond the margins of self.
And their reward is not found in the
unhallowed trappings of riches and notoriety,
but in a kind of inner glory and genuine
gratification that those with a fierce
fetish to be revered and praised
rarely achieve.
